Ocean Discovery Institute, Living Lab is a multi-story building designed to be integrated into the surrounding canyon and environment.  The building itself is approximately 12,000 SF and the building site is approximately 28,000 SF. The primary use of the facility are science labs, offices, classroom space, and meeting space. The secondary use of the facility is community space, provide access to nature, interpretation, and living lab as a community resource.

Some of the strategies included in this project are the following: high performance building envelope, high performance glazing along with shading and daylighting, operable windows for natural ventilation, high performance lighting and lighting controls, rainwater/storm water storage and re-use, gray water storage and re-use, photovoltaic, no mechanical cooling, and only heating and forced ventilation provided where needed.

Plumbing systems include sanitary waste and vent, domestic cold and hot water, and storm water reclaim, grease waste system, and grey water reuse system.
