Naval Medical Center Central Plant Expansion

Naval Medical Center Central Plant Expansion

Mechanical engineering services for the central plant at the Naval Hospital San Diego, consisting of approximately 1.1 million SF of hospital and medical office building space. The existing central plant capacity is 3,450 tons and includes a co-generation plant.

The new design provides for the replacement of two 850-ton centrifugal chillers and one 850-ton single stage absorption chiller with one 1150- ton centrifugal chiller and two 1150-ton two-stage steam absorption chillers. This project also includes the conversion of the existing single-stage pumping system to a primary/secondary system. Heat recovery through a 4.6 MW co-generation plant produces steam required to fire the absorption chillers.
